What is Telematics or Telemetry?
Telematics comes from 'tele' meaning remote and 'matic' meaning measurement.
Telemetry means the same thing, although many people incorrectly associate
telematics with the automotive industry only. Although vehicle tracking
and fleet management is a core application of this technology, remote
monitoring can be useful to virtually any industry.
Highly automated communications device are available whereby measurements
are taken and other data collected at static, remote or inaccessible points
and transmitted to receiving equipment for monitoring, display and recording.
This is called 'remote data capture'.
What is GSM?
GSM or Global System for Mobile communications is an open, non-proprietary
system that is constantly evolving. One of its great strengths is the
international roaming capability. This gives consumers seamless and same
standardized, same number contactability in more than 170 countries. GSM
satellite roaming has extended service access to areas where terrestrial
coverage is not available. The use of a GSM modem now provides a viable
cost alternative to traditional 'land-lines' Telematics
involves the application of numerous disciplines e.g. hardware, real-time
software, electronics, micro-processors, embedded systems, serial and
wireless communications : GPS, GSM & GPRS technologies etc.
Aims and Objectives
a) Invest in growth market - location based services (Computing Magazine
April, 2003 highlighted the growth in this market through the proliferation
of wireless devices, BlueTooth, GPRS, falling hardware costs, integration,
etc.).
b) Introduce and market the importance
/ relevance of Telematics and related products in South Asia
c) Introduce a competitively priced Telematics
product in South Asia.
d) Establish xPert Technologies as indigenous
centre of Telematics expertise in PakAsia for Fleet Operators, Utilities
and industrial market.
e) Establish foundation and standards
for a Telematics Industry in PakAsia. To establish related products and
services in this untapped market segment,
f) Offer consultancy / training courses
e.g. Introduction to GPS, Telematics, etc.
Why is Telematics important in
PakAsia?
PakAsia is a geographically large and diverse country (804 sq km) where
it trades extensively with China. It is host to over 500 foreign companies.
It is close to and serves the Middle East. In addition it is close to
Central Asia and has very large neighbours on both East and West. As trade
with neighboring countries grows so will the problem of transport logistics
i.e. ability to monitor vehicle movements, theft, loss of goods, security,
temperature of perishable goods, etc.
